A person who is easily fooled is typically referred to as a gullible person. Gullibility is the trait of being too ready to believe that something is true without questioning it or demanding proof. Gullible people are often taken advantage of because they accept ideas and statements without proper skepticism or research.
A common proverb to warn gullible people is, "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me," which means that if you are fooled once, the other person should feel guilty, but if you are fooled twice, then you should feel embarrassed for not being more cautious.
Gullibility can stem from a lack of knowledge, developing too trusting of a relationship with another person, or simply not caring enough to make sure something is true before believing it. Some people are naturally too trusting and can be taken advantage of because of it.
For most people, the occasional gullibility is not a huge concern. However, for those who fall for scam schemes, it can mean financial loss or even putting themselves in a dangerous situation. It can be difficult to help someone become less gullible, other than teaching them to be skeptical and question things when necessary.
