Girls Who Code is a charitable organization working to close the gender gap in technology and computer science by providing free resources, events, and clubs to girls across the United States. Started in 2012, Girls Who Code uses a holistic approach to ensure that young girls are exposed to topics such as applicable mathematics, technology-based literacy, and practical problem solving skills.
The organization supports a variety of programs and events, such as after-school clubs, summer immersion programs, competitive robotics tournaments, and summer coding camps. Held in various colleges, technology companies, and universities, the goal of these events is to expose young girls to potential careers in technology, giving them the chance to make well-informed decisions about their future.
The Girls Who Code organization also seeks to make technology more inclusive and overcome the gender gap in the field by bringing girls from different backgrounds and experiences together in a noncompetitive environment. In a bid to make coding accessible, the organization also offers a variety of free online resources that break down topics like web development, machine learning, and artificial intelligence in an easy-to-understand way for girls of all ages.
Girls Who Code has made considerable progress since its inception, and its participants have since earned hundreds of millions of dollars in scholarships, internships, and job offers. In addition, the organization has partnered with a host of brands, organizations, and foundations across the country to expand its reach.
Ultimately, the Girls Who Code mission is to ensure that girls of all backgrounds have the skills, access, and opportunity they need to compete in the field of technology. By focusing on nurturing future technical talent and leaders, the organization is well on its way to closing the gender gap within the tech industry.
