The Bible is full of assurance that God is with us wherever we go and whatever we do, but we can sometimes feel discouraged and alone. Where in the Bible does God say "I am"? It is no surprise then that many people turn to Scripture when needing comfort and assurance.
God’s presence is one of the primary themes of the Bible, and it transpires throughout both the Old and New Testaments. He makes Himself known in some of the most profound statements in Scripture. One of the most notable is found in the book of Exodus chapter 3:14:
And God said unto Moses, “I AM THAT I AM.”
These four words are an affirmation of the name of God – His presence, His power, His love, His faithfulness. As He speaks to Moses from the burning bush, He reminds us that He is the Great I Am. He identifies Himself as the one and only, ever-present God. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. I AM THAT I AM underscores the fact that God is the same in all circumstances, in all times and all places. He is the only one who can never change and can always be depended upon.
Another powerful passage that conveys the same message can be found in the book of Isaiah. Here, the prophet declares:
“Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, and He who formed you from the womb: ‘I am the Lord, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the Earth by myself, who frustrates the signs of the babblers, and drives diviners mad. I am the Lord, and there is no other…” (Isaiah 44:24-25).
This verse speaks of the immense power that God possesses and again, emphasizes His qualities as the only one who is unchanging and unchangeable.
In addition to these verses, the book of Psalms contains many comforting passages that speak to God’s presence in our lives. Psalm 46:10-11 states, “Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Here, we can be encouraged to be still, to rest in the assurance that we are never alone. We can take comfort in the fact that God is always with us, no matter how big our problem might appear, we can turn to Him for comfort and hope.
The Bible is a powerful reminder that we have a loving and ever-present God who is always with us. No matter where we go, or what we face, we can always turn to Him for help and comfort.
