The Man Who Never Was is a classic British spy drama released in 1956 that tells the incredible true story of Operation Mincemeat, an Allied military deception during World War II. It stars Clifton Webb and Gloria Grahame, and was directed by Ronald Neame.
The film follows a British Naval Intelligence officer who concocts a plan to dispose of a body on the coast of Spain to deceive Nazi intelligence that the Allies were planning an invasion of southern Europe. If successful, the plan would foil Germany’s plans to move their forces to the eastern Mediterranean.
The movie received excellent reviews from contemporary critics, with particular praise for its suspenseful and believable narrative. The film was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Writing, Story and Screenplay.
