The history of mathematicians adding letters to mathematics is a complex one. While some of the letters denote specific constants or variables, there are some that don’t appear to have a specific purpose. Here we will look at the various mathematicians responsible for the creation of the modern mathematical notation, and some of the more obscure letters.

The Newtonian approach to mathematics, popularized by Sir Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz in the seventeenth century, brought a systematic approach to mathematics, allowing for the derivation of relationships and formulas that might otherwise have been impossible to develop. This included new symbols such as the process of differentiation or the use of d’s or delta to denote change, as well as specific operators such as the equality sign or the plus or minus signs.

Euler, who worked in the eighteenth century, was responsible for the use of capital letters in mathematics such as the use of φ (phi) or Ω (omega). He was also the first mathematician to use the letter i in math equations, thanks to his work with complex numbers. Other mathematicians to add letters to math include Joseph Fourier who used f (Fourier Transform) and Augustin-Louis Cauchy who introduced c (Central Limit Theorem) and e (Euler’s number).

More recently, algebraic symbols such as sigma (∑) and pi (π) have been adopted for calculations such as summation, area, or circumference. Symbols such as theta (θ) and phi (φ) have been adopted for vectors, vectorspace and fields, while Martin Gardner’s use of n (not) and m (maybe) denote logical values and propositions in mathematical logic.

Finally, with the advances made in computer sciences, many new symbols have been created, including variables such as x, y, and z (with the possibility of others). In some cases, these variables are represented by the use of other symbols such as e and t, or even entire sets of numbers, such as the natural numbers or the irrational numbers.

Ultimately, the use of letters, constants and symbols in mathematics helps to make the subject easier to understand, and allows mathematicians to make advances and develop theories that wouldn’t have been possible before.
