In 1998, Elvis Presley was honored by the United States Postal Service with a commemorative postage stamp, making him the first and only solo rock and roll star to achieve this distinction. The design of the stamp, which featured a classic photo of Presley taken in 1955, was chosen from more than 15,000 entries submitted to the USPS. It is the best-selling commemorative stamp in U.S. history, with more than 127 million copies purchased.
The USPS was quick to recognize the fan reaction to the stamp; in 2000, they issued a follow-up stamp that featured a newer photograph of Presley. It was proclaimed the most successful non-holiday stamp issue of all time and sold over 172 million copies. Both stamps are still popular among collectors today.
Elvis’ impact on American culture is undeniable; he remains a cultural icon decades after his death and is recognized even by those who may not be familiar with his music. The commemorative postage stamps are just one of the many ways his iconic status is celebrated and remembered.
