The Sackler family is a multigenerational, billionaire pharmaceutical dynasty. They are best known for their ownership of Purdue Pharma, the company which manufactures OxyContin. With annual sales of more than $3 billion, OxyContin developed a wide, and sometimes fatal, customer base among opioid addicts.
The Sackler family has remained relatively unknown outside of the pharmaceutical industry, but their influence and wealth have put them among the top 30 richest families in the United States.
Arthur M. Sackler was the original founder and innovator of the family business. He acquired Purdue Pharma in 1952 and is responsible for launching the OxyContin brand. Arthur died in 1987, leaving behind his sons and nephews to continue the business. His sons, Mortimer, Raymond, and Richard, took control of the company and launched it into the industrying giant it is today.
Mortimer D. Sackler, who handled day to day functioning of the company, was seen as the most vocal and public face of Purdue Pharma. He died in 1987. His two sons, David and Jonathan, and two nephews, Richard S and Kathe Sackler, have taken up his mantle and have expanded the family business.
Moreover, Richard S. Sackler, a doctor by trade, has acted as president of Purdue Pharma and was the central figure in the marketing of OxyContin. He and his brother-in-law James Thompson are rarely seen in the public eye but remain one of the key members of the Sackler family business.
The Sackler family continues to be a major influence in the pharmaceutical industry and in the United States’ health system. They have been accused of unethical business practices and are currently facing an ongoing public health lawsuit from various state attorneys general, alleging misleading marketing and contributing to the nationwide opioid epidemic. Despite this, the family remains one of the wealthiest families in the US, with an estimated net worth of $13 billion.
