The origin of the expression “who brought the sauce” has become an international phenomenon. It is heard and used everywhere and has come to embody the spirit of having a great time. But where did it begin?
The most widely accepted origin of the phrase “who brought the sauce” is traced back to the early 1990s. It is believed that the phrase first became popular when rapper Red Man from the hip hop duo of EPMD sampled the line from a 1987 indie film entitled, “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” The comedic character, Eddie Valiant, said the line to describe a cloudy night out. This line eventually made its way into the hip-hop milieu, especially after it was popularized by Red Man in his 1992 song, “Who Brought the Sauce?”.
From there, the phrase gained further international recognition when it was used by a host of hip hop, rap, and other genres of music. The UK DJ Jazzy Jeff sampled it in the 1995 single “Summertime” and it has been featured in countless pop culture references, such as in the popular sitcom “Friends”.
The phrase “who brought the sauce” has come to symbolize having a good time and carefree attitude. It celebrates the spontaneous nature of life and the joys of sharing a laugh and memorable moments with friends. As one of the quintessential ways to bring people together and make an occasion even more unforgettable, it is unsurprising that “who brought the sauce” is an expression that is heard throughout the world today.
