Facebook was created by Mark Zuckerberg while he was a student at Harvard University. He first launched the social media platform as "TheFacebook" on February 4, 2004, relying on a basic HTML code and a catchy slogan, "Thefacebook is a college directory crossed with a yearbook."
At the time, Zuckerberg only had a few hundred people to use the platform – almost entirely his fellow Harvard students. When the network grew, he and a few early employees moved out of his dorm room and into actual offices to continue the development of the platform.
After launching a series of successful advertising campaigns that attracted hundreds of thousands of users, Mark and his co-founders decided to expand and offer the platform to all college students in the U.S. In 2006, Facebook opened up to the general public and soon became a sensation.
Today, Facebook has over 2.5 billion monthly users and is one of the most successful and influential tech companies in the world. It has introduced a range of innovative products, such as Facebook Live, Marketplace, and its acquisitions of Instagram, WhatsApp, and Oculus VR.
