Pokémon, the beloved multimedia franchise created in 1996, originally began as an idea from Game Freak co-founder Satoshi Tajiri. Tajiri was a long-time video game enthusiast who helped create some of the earliest video games from the 1980s.
Tajiri was inspired by his childhood love of insect collecting. The original concept was to create a role-playing game featuring little creatures that could be collected, similar to insect collecting. He then took the classic RPG format and added the concept of “capturing” creatures to the game as well.
To realize his idea, Tajiri had to explain his vision to Game Freak and Nintendo, which was the parent company at the time. After a few years of development Tajiri and Game Freak released Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue in Japan in February of 1996.
The first battery-powered game ever produced by a Nintendo-owned studio, the game was an immediate success. After the release of Red and Green, the games were remembered as the first console role-playing game with collection elements. This was one of the main features that drew in droves of fans and made Pokémon become the classic series it is today.
Since its release, Pokémon has become one of the highest-grossing media franchises ever created, and still remains popular today.
Clearly, Satoshi Tajiri was the creative visionary behind the beloved franchise. He had a wild idea, and persevered until it was finally brought to life. As a result, children (and adults!) all around the world have a beloved series to enjoy and be inspired by.
