The atomic bomb, one of the most devastating weapons ever used, is something of a mystery to many people. Who actually created the atomic bomb and why?
The atomic bomb was created as a result of the Manhattan Project, a massive undertaking coordinated by the United States government during World War II. The project was led by physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, and was a joint effort among America, Britain, and Canada. Its purpose was to develop the atomic bomb, using nuclear fission to create energy.
The Manhattan Project employed more than 120,000 people from 1942 to 1946, and cost the US government almost $2 billion. Among its many amazing accomplishments, the team managed to produce the world’s first atomic bombs.
Although the world was unaware of the project and its intentions, German scientists — some of whom had already had even theories about atomic weapons — were also working on a similar project. The Allied forces, however, beat the Axis powers to the punch and were the first to develop an atomic weapon.
The first atomic bombs were tested on July 16, 1945, in a remote desert location in New Mexico called the Trinity Test. This was followed shortly after by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the last days of the war.
Although the Manhattan Project gave the world two of its most devastating weapons, it also gave us an invaluable look into the power of science and technology. Its legacy lives on to this day; its significance as a project of scientific advancement cannot be denied.
