TikTok is a popular video-sharing app founded in 2016 by Zhang Yiming. Zhang is a Chinese tech entrepreneur and billionaire who also co-founded the tech giant, ByteDance. ByteDance is an internet technology company headquartered in Beijing, China. It was founded in 2012 and is seen as a global thought leader in artificial intelligence and machine learning.
TikTok allows users to create and share short (usually 15-60 second) videos. The app has become hugely popular worldwide and is used by over 800 million people globally every month. It is especially popular with teens and young adults as they love the quirky and funny content that the app offers.
Previously, Zhang Yiming worked as an engineer at Microsoft, where he developed the Bing mobile app which became quite popular in China. He then decided to leave the tech giant to focus on his own venture. He and the team at ByteDance came up with the idea to create a video-sharing app which could leverage the power of artificial intelligence and machine learning to offer users an unparalleled level of customized content.
It is through Zhang Yiming’s vision and leadership that TikTok was created and launched in 2016. It is now a global sensation and has become the go-to app for many people for entertainment and connection, especially during the pandemic.
