The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." This definition goes beyond just the absence of disease or infirmity to include a sense of physical, mental, and social well-being. It emphasizes that a whole-person approach must be taken to promote good health and foster a sense of life satisfaction.
In practice, extensive research and evidence-based stories have identified certain factors that contribute to health. These include adequate nutrition, physical activity, healthy habits, access to health care and other necessary services, clean air, safe water, and safe living conditions.
The WHO further outlines its definition of health by confirming that health exists within a linked horizon, in which aspects of health move together in an ever-changing reciprocal loop. This means that aspects of health that may appear independent — like diet, physical activity, or mental health — are, in fact, connected in a dynamic way that can influence a person’s overall health and well-being.
