9/11 is one of the most significant events of our time that left an indelible impression on an entire generation. On the morning of September 11, 2001, the world watched in horror as terror attacks were carried out by al-Qaeda on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, DC. 19 people associated with the Islamic extremist group, led by Osama bin Laden, conspired to hijack four commercial airplanes and direct them at various U.S. targets.
The 19 hijackers were both Saudis and non-Saudis, who were trained by al-Qaeda to carry out the attacks. The men included Mohamed Atta, Marwan al-Shehhi, Ziad Jarrah, Hani Hanjour, Wail and Waleed Alshehri, Ahmed al-Nami, Fayez Banihammad, Ahmed al-Ghamdi, Mohald al-Shehri, Majed Moqed, Saeed Alghamdi, Hamza al-Ghamdi, Salem al-Hazmi, Ahmed al-Haznawi, Satam al-Suqami, Abd al-Aziz al-Omari, Abdulaziz al-Omari, Ahmed al-Nami and Saeed al-Ghamdi.
The attacks killed thousands of people, leaving a haunting reminder of the catastrophic event and its grave implications. Bin Laden and al-Qaeda subsequently claimed responsibility for the attacks, which invigorated a fierce campaign against terror worldwide.
