Grey’s Anatomy is a medical drama series that has been airing since 2005. The show has been acclaimed for its complex characters and dynamic storylines and won numerous awards, including a Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Drama in 2007. Over the years, a number of characters have come and gone, leaving a lasting impact on viewers. Some characters have died, either from natural causes or events that happened within the show. Here are a few of the most memorable deaths from Grey’s Anatomy.
George O’Malley – One of the original characters, George O’Malley (T.R. Knight) was a fan favorite. He was killed in a train accident in Season 5 when he tried to save a stranger. His death was heartbreaking not just for his loyal fans, but also for his fellow surgeons, especially Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl).
Lexie Grey – Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) was Meredith’s half-sister who arrived at Seattle Grace after her father, Thatcher Grey, sent her there for medical training. After a tragic plane crash in Season 8, Lexie died from her injures despite Mark’s (Eric Dane) efforts to save her.
Mark Sloan – Mark Sloan (known lovingly as "McSteamy" by the female characters) was a master surgeon known for his womanizing and cocky attitude. He was an integral part of the show for five seasons, but things changed after the fatal plane crash in Season 8. Mark sacrificed himself to save the life of a fellow patient and sadly, he passed away in the hospital.
Derek Shepherd – Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) was a head of surgical and a central figure in Grey’s Anatomy. His on-and-off relationship with Meredith was the stuff of legends. In Season 11, a distracted and grief-stricken Derek drove off the road and died at the scene. His death left fans heartbroken and the show never quite recovered.
Ellis Grey – Ellis Grey (Kate Burton) was Meredith’s mother and one of the most influential women in Grey’s Anatomy. She had Alzheimer’s Disease and her life story was a tragic one. She died from a surgery complication in Season 3, much to the sadness of Meredith and Richard (James Pickens Jr.).
These deaths have left a lasting impact on the fans of Grey’s Anatomy. It’s a reminder that death is an unavoidable part of life and that our time here is limited. But despite this, there is still a lot of room for hope and love, too.
