Throughout history, there have been numerous monstrous individuals who have inflicted unprecedented levels of cruelty and death upon millions of innocent victims. Among these monstrous individuals, some stand out above the others due to the sheer magnitude of their crimes. In this article, we will explore who has killed the most people in history.
The first name to come to mind is Adolf Hitler; this infamous dictator decimated Europe during World War II and is responsible for the deaths of approximately 5.5-6 million Jews as part of his infamous “Final Solution.”
The second individual is Joseph Stalin, the former Premier of the Soviet Union. Under Stalin’s rule, the Soviet Union saw unprecedented levels of mass murder and genocide, leading to the death of some twenty million people, many of whom were killed in Stalin’s wave of purges and forced relocations in the 1930s.
The next perpetrator of mass murder is Mao Zedong, the leader of the People’s Republic of China for almost three decades. During his terms in office, Mao’s enforcement of his radical policies resulted in the death of approximately 45-78 million people.
The fourth prominent figure is Pol Pot, the leader of the Khmer Rouge. As a result of Pol Pot’s oppressive rule of Cambodia during the late-1970s, around 1.5 to 2 million Cambodians perished.
And finally, coming in at number five is Hideki Tojo, leader of the Japanese Empire during World War II. Tojo is responsible for some of the bloodiest battles in the War, which led to the deaths of some four million people in China and Southeast Asia.
All of these five leaders are responsible for immense suffering and death, but one stands out from the others; Mao Zedong’s policies during his rule of China led to the deaths of between 45-78 million people, bearing him the title of the leader who has killed the most people in history.
