The NFL’s modern era began in 1970 when the NFL and AFL merged together to form one league. As teams continued to compete through the years, some of them became standouts. While the league’s annual champions were crowned on the field, there have been some teams that simply outdid the rest year in and year out.
The Dallas Cowboys are easily the most accomplished NFL franchise in history. The Cowboys have won five Super Bowls, which is the most all-time, and have been notably successful in every era since their founding in 1960. The New England Patriots also have an impressive résumé as one of the most successful franchises since the early 2000s. The Patriots have won six Super Bowl titles and have been to the playoffs in 14 consecutive seasons.
The Green Bay Packers have the best winning percentage in NFL history at .578, though they have only won four Super Bowls. The Packers have made the playoffs in 25 of the last 36 seasons, though their last championship came in 2010. The Pittsburgh Steelers have won six Super Bowl titles, but their overall winning percentage is .566, the third-best in NFL history.
It is impressive to note that most of the teams with the highest winning percentages have existed throughout the NFL’s history. The New York Jets, however, were plucked from the AFL in the 1970 merger, and they boast the fourth-best winning percentage in the NFL at .564.
Not all of the NFL’s powerhouse teams have been as consistent as the aforementioned franchises. The San Francisco 49ers have won five Super Bowls, but mustered only a .528 winning percentage, leaving them tied for the 16th-best record in the NFL history.
The best record in NFL history belongs to the Dallas Cowboys with a winning percentage of .578. The Cowboys have reigned supreme in the post-1970 era, and have been a major part of each decade in the NFL. Meanwhile, the Packers, Patriots, Steelers, and Jets haven’t been far behind, with sustainable success at a level that few other teams can match.
