It may sound like the question a child asks after seeing a cartoon character but it turns out that the answer has a scientific basis. The official title for the person with the world’s largest head is macrocephaly and the condition most commonly affects children.
Macrocephaly is a result of a disruption in the genetic coding that can cause more fluid to be absorbed into the head, resulting in an abnormally large size. Most cases are thought to be due to a malfunction of the brain’s neurotransmitting chemicals, resulting in excess growth.
Though it is known that there is currently no “biggest head” record holder, there is at least one known case of macrocephaly. In 2014, a six-year-old Chinese boy named Hai Gong was reported by the Daily Mail to have the “biggest head” in the world. He suffered from a rare condition, known as hydrocephalus, which is caused by a failure of the brain’s ventricles to properly drain cerebrospinal fluid into the body. As a result, this fluid accumulates in the brain, resulting in a large head circumference.
The treatment for Hai Gong’s condition is a complex series of operations to lower the accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid, as well as other treatments to help reduce the swelling. Doctors are hopeful that the treatments would help normalize his skull size significantly, although he is bound to always have a larger head than average.
Macrocephaly is usually a benign condition and most children with it lead relatively normal lives. Although there is no official “biggest head” record holder, living with macrocephaly can be challenging enough to take the record.
