In The World
The United States of America has the biggest military in the world by far. With over 2.1 million active personnel and reserves totaling 1.3 million, the US has a military that is significantly larger than the next nearest competitor.
The United States Armed Forces consists of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard. This formidable force is capable of conducting land, sea, and air operations with relative speed and agility.
The next largest military in the world is China. With just under 2 million personnel, China has the second-largest military in the world. However, China’s military is comprised of mainly ground forces. China does have some naval and air capabilities, but does not stack up as a superpower in terms of naval power or strategic bombing capability.
Russia ranks third at a shade under 1.5 million personnel. The Russian Armed Forces are made up of land, sea, and air forces. Russia boasts one of the world’s largest fleets of submarines and is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
These three countries make up the majority of global defense spending. Combined, the three countries spent nearly 1.8 trillion USD on their militaries in 2019.
Some smaller countries also maintain powerful militaries. India has over one million personnel, making it the fourth-largest military in the world. Other countries, such as France and Germany, possess powerful militaries with capabilities similar to Russia and China.
No matter the size of a country, maintaining a powerful military is essential for protecting its people and strategic interests. By far, the United States has the biggest and most powerful military in the world, allowing it to project its power across the globe.
