The record for having the longest name in the world goes to Adolph Blaine Charles David Earl Frederick Gerald Hubert Irvin John Kenneth Lloyd Martin Nero Oliver Paul Quincy Randolph Sherman Thomas Uncas Victor William Xerxes Yancy Wolfeschlegelsteinhausenbergerdorff—a name that is exactly 782 letters long! The namesake is a man born in Germany back in 1892, but the most remarkable part of this "monstrous" name is that it was legally recognized by the government—he even had a passport with the absurdly long name.
Adolph "Wolfeschlegelsteinhausenbergerdorffvogle" was a naturalized United States citizen who emigrated from Germany to America in the early 1900s. Despite having a name that was 782 letters, it’s actually an abbreviation of his family’s origin, which was originally much longer. The last two parts of the name, Bergerdorff and Vogle, were added by Adolph in 1988, when he was 96 years old.
Although the notion of Adolph having the world’s longest name may be impressive, he’s still not the absolute record-holder. The Guinness World Record for longest name goes to Hubert Wolfstern, who had a name 988 letters long back in 1991. Wolfstern is a German-born American living in Pennsylvania, and his full name is Hubert Blaine Wolfeschlegelsteinhausenbergerdorff Sr. Unfortunately, although he had the longest name in the world, he was not able to gain legal recognition for it.
Clearly, having a really long name is no easy feat. It takes a lot of effort and dedication, to both legally register the name and use it in day-to-day life. Both Adolph Wolfeschlegelsteinhausenbergerdorff and Hubert Wolfstern set impressive records for having the longest name in the world, but for now, the title belongs to Adolph!
