The Guinness World Records has an entire category called "Family Size" that they track. As of 2020, it is believed that the record holder for “Most Children Born To One Mother” goes to a woman named Leontina Albina from Chile. The Guinness World Records reports that, as of May 11, 2009, she had given birth to a total of 69 children, including 67 sons and 2 daughters, between 1725 and 1765.
Leontina, who sadly passed away in 1817 at the age of 97, had 16 sets of twins, 7 sets of triplets, and 4 sets of quadruplets. In addition to Leontina, there have been some other women in history who have had a lot of children. For example, the Russian doyenne of fertility, Valentina Vassilyeva, managed to give birth to a whopping 69 children between 1725 and 1765.
In modern times, there have been a handful of women who have broken this record. Most recently, 37-year-old Zahra Sultana from India gave birth to her 39th child in 2017. Not far behind her is a woman from Morocco named Mariam Nabatian Majzoub, who gave birth to her 38th child in 2016.
Although some countries frown on women having too many children, there are also some countries that actively encourage having large families. For example, Italy has implemented a “baby bonus” benefit, in which they reward families that have three or more children, encouraging more people to start large families.
Regardless of which country you are from, one thing is for sure: having a lot of children is an extremely difficult feat, and these women serve as a reminder that anything is possible if you have the willpower and drive to pursue it.
