Michelin Stars are awarded to restaurants throughout the world based on their quality of food and service. The stars have become a sought-after symbol of excellence in the culinary industry, and chefs strive to gain them in order to set their restaurants apart from the competition.
The most Michelin stars earned by a single chef currently belongs to French chef Alain Ducasse. He has a total of 20 stars, earned across 14 restaurants throughout the world, including seven in the U.S. He was the first chef to earn three-star ratings in both France and the United States in 2007.
The chef with the second-highest number of stars belongs to the Basque-country based Juan Mari Arzak. Arzak has 15 stars, earned from 9 restaurants.
Third place belongs to Guy Savoy, with 15 stars from 10 different restaurants.
The fourth spot is held by French chef Joel Robuchon, who has 14 stars from 11 restaurants.
Finally, fifth place is held by Italian chef Massimo Bottura, who has 12 stars from two restaurants.
Though Michelin stars are highly coveted, only very few chefs can even make it onto the list. To be able to sustain such a demanding level of culinary excellence is no easy feat, and requires an immense amount of talent and hard work. This makes the above chefs truly some of the world’s very best.
