The country with the most Olympic medals is the United States, with a total of 2,523 medals since the first summer Games in Athens in 1896. The combined tally of the United States amounts to 28.2% of all the Olympic medals awarded since 1896.
As of 2018, the United States’ total number of medals stands at 1,354 gold, 776 silver, and 393 bronze. The next most successful country is Germany, which has won 866 medals in total.
It is worth noting that the United States’ success in the Olympic Games has not been consistent over the years. In the early 2000s, the US’s success dropped significantly, particularly in the summer Games. In 2008, the US finished the summer Games with its lowest medal tally in 80 years — only 110 medals, finishing fourth in the overall rankings.
However, the US managed to make a remarkable comeback as it won the most medals in the 2012 London Olympics, with a total of 103 gold, 85 silver, and 78 bronze. The US also led the medal tally in both the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
The US’s success in the Olympics is largely attributed to its large sports talent pool and the consistent level of financial support for Olympic athletes and teams.
