With four wins and 13 nominations all together, director William Wyler, is the person to have the most Oscars.
The Ohio-born director earned a total of 12 nods from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, including three for Best Director for his work on The Best Years of Our Lives (1947), Ben-Hur (1959), and Mrs. Miniver (1942). Additionally, Wyler won three Oscars for Best Motion Picture for his work on Mrs. Miniver; The Heiress (1949); and Ben-Hur, which still stands as the biggest movie sweep in the Academy’s history.
Wyler was also nominated for his work on Dodsworth (1936), Wuthering Heights (1939), The Letter (1940), Roman Holiday (1953), Friendly Persuasion (1956), The Big Country (1958), and The children’s Hour (1961).
The only person to come close to Wyler’s Oscar record is the great director Alfred Hitchcock, who also holds a record of 13 Oscar nominations. However, he only won statuettes for Best Picture (not Best Director) for Rebecca (1940) and Lifeboat (1944).
Overall, Wyler has earned the most Oscars ever, with four wins and 13 nominations.
