In fact, the first patent for a practical electric car was granted in 1888 to British inventor Thomas Parker, although it was not fully developed and went nowhere. The first electric vehicle for practical uses—such as a taxi, delivery vehicle, or other commercial application—was built by Scottish inventor Robert Anderson in 1832.

In the 1970s, the invention of the electric vehicle (EV) concept began to gain traction, as gasoline prices started to rise and the public began to demand cleaner, more efficient vehicles. Electric cars became commercially viable in the mid-1980s with cars such as the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight, which are powered by a petrol engine and electric motor.

Modern-day electric cars began to become more commonplace when Tesla Motors introduced their first production electric car, the Tesla Roadster, in 2008. Since then, many car manufacturers have followed suit, releasing multiple offerings of electric vehicles in their product lineups.

Today, electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular, as the public is more aware of the environmental impact that traditional vehicles can have. Electric cars are eco-friendly, cost efficient and come with a variety of benefits, making them both a clean and economical choice.
