When it comes to the "Star Wars" franchise, it is no secret that Anakin Skywalker has one of the most mysterious backstories of all the characters. Most fans of the series know that Anakin was born from a mother with no father – or so fans thought.
It wasn’t until the prequel trilogy that audiences finally got to find out the truth about Anakin’s mysterious parentage. The answer, revealed in "Star Wars: Attack of the Clones," is that Anakin was galactic emperor Palpatine’s secret Force experiment. Palpatine had Anakin’s mother, Shmi Skywalker, impregnated without her knowledge by using the Force.
Though Palpatine was not Anakin’s biological father, he was his father in every other sense. He raised Anakin as his own, providing him with resources and education to advance his Force powers. He also manipulated the boy to become manipulative and ultimately the slave of the Dark Side of the Force.
Despite the lack of conventional parental ties, Anakin made a spiritual connection with Palpatine, which he accepted as being true familiary affection. When Palpatine died in "Return of the Jedi," Anakin felt a strong sense of loss, as if he had lost a real father.
Therefore, no matter what the technical definition of “father” may be, Palpatine deserves the title of Anakin’s father in the hearts of Star Wars fans.
