Beetlejuice is a beloved ghoulish character from the American horror-fantasy comedy film of the same name. The movie, directed by Tim Burton and released in 1988 by The Geffen Company, stars Michael Keaton in the titular role of Beetlejuice — AKA Betelgeuse. The cult classic movie follows a recently deceased couple, the Maitlands, as they enlist the help of Beetlejuice to help them remove a family of pretentious yuppies — the Deetzes — from their home.
Beetlejuice is a mischievous trickster who has no qualms about breaking the rules of life and death and messing with people’s minds. Despite his chaotic energy, his outlandish antics, and bad attitude, Beetlejuice is actually quite charming in a weird sort of way; he even wins the hearts of the Deetzes’ daughter and her friend in the end.
In the film, Beetlejuice is a tall, ghoulish-looking character with long, wild hair and a multi-colored striped suit. He brings a sense of humor to his evil deeds, often playing pranks on people and coming up with fantastic ideas that no one else would ever think of. He is snarky, wickedly funny, energetic, and loves to stir up trouble.
Beetlejuice also displays a range of crazy supernatural powers that make him even more appealing. Not only can he teleport himself and others to different locations — like the Neitherworld — he can also make himself invisible, shapeshift, hover in midair, summon dragons, and create portals to different dimensions. He even has the ability to possess people in order to control them.
Beetlejuice has become a cult icon in the years since the film’s release, inspiring many spin-offs and related media, such as the animated cartoon series, comic books, and video games. He is one of the most beloved characters of the horror genre, embodying a blend of spooky, silly, and even likable characteristics — and still making audiences laugh to this day.
