Betty White is an American television and film actress best known for her long-standing role on the iconic sitcom The Golden Girls.
Born in Oak Park, Illinois in 1922, White studied in high school where she developed a love for acting. After graduating in 1939, she pursued a career in acting and began performing in radio shows, appearances in several movies and television specials. Her debut in television was in the 1950s with roles in various sitcoms and for her first series role in Life With Elizabeth.
White was then cast as Rose Nylund in The Golden Girls in 1985. The show ran for seven seasons where she earned four Emmy awards and numerous Golden Globe nominations. Along with The Golden Girls, some of her acclaimed performances included her roles in Mary Tyler Moore, Boston Legal, The Mary Tyler Moore Hour and Hot In Cleveland.
White is highly respected in Hollywood. She has been named the oldest television performer in 2020, and she was named the "most popular female star" by the Guinness Book of World Records. It’s no wonder she’s earned the nickname of "America’s Favorite Grandma!"
White is most active in advocating for animal rights. She collaborated with the Morris Animal Foundation and has provided financial support to several animal organizations.
In her career she has received numerous accolades, including being inducted into the Television Hall of Fame, five Emmy Awards and a Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award. She embodies the success and hard work of an older woman who persevered in a business that typically values youth.
At 98, White is still kicking and continuing her acting. In 2020 she won MTV’s Trailblazer Award and is beloved by the world.
