Known as El Chapo, Joaquin Guzman Loera is one of the most notorious drug traffickers of all time. Born in La Tuna, in Badiraguato, Sinaloa, Mexico, in 1954, El Chapo rose to become the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, a multinational drug trafficking and organized crime syndicate.
At the height of the cartel’s strength, the US Department of the Treasury estimated it controlled over 80% of the total drug trafficking business in Mexico. It has been described by the United States as the “most powerful drug trafficking organization in the world.” El Chapo managed to elude capture for over 25 years, until he was arrested in 2016 in Los Mochis, Sinaloa.
El Chapo’s criminal activities revolved around smuggling and distributing huge quantities of cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamine and other illicit drugs into the United States, Australia and Europe. He established a network of contacts throughout Latin America and the United States, along with a record for violent acts of intimidation and assassination.
El Chapo famously escaped from Mexican prison in 2001. He was not recaptured until 2014 and was re-imprisoned before being extradited to the United States in 2017. He was tried in New York City in 2018 and was convicted of multiple drug and money laundering charges. He is currently serving a life sentence in the United States.
Despite his criminal career, El Chapo has become something of a folk hero in Mexico, with some admirers considering him a Robin Hood-like character.
