The most expensive baseball card ever sold at auction is the 1909-11 T206 White Border Honus Wagner. The card was produced by the American Tobacco Company as part of their T206 series and is considered to be one of the most iconic cards ever manufactured.
Honus Wagner was a Major League Baseball (MLB) player who played shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates through the early 20th century. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest players in all of baseball history, and his T206 card is the most sought-after item in the hobby of baseball memorabilia collecting.
The card was sold in 2007 for an astonishing $2.8 million, making it by far the most expensive baseball card ever sold at auction. The card had been owned by NHL Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky since 1991, and was sold directly to a private collector after being offered at the famous Robert Edward auction.
The money generated from the sale of the Honus Wagner card set a record that has yet to be broken by another baseball card. Wagner’s T206 card is so highly coveted because of its historical value, incredible rarity, and Wagner’s remarkable baseball career. There are only about 50 copies of the card still in existence, with each one having its own unique back story.
As one of the most sought-after and iconic items in sports memorabilia collecting, the Honus Wagner T206 card truly stands out from all the other baseball cards. Its astonishing sale price reflects the tremendous value placed on items owned and/or associated with one of the greatest players in baseball history.
