Blanchard
Gypsy Rose Blanchard is an American woman who caused a severe controversy throughout America when, at the age of 23, she was convicted of second-degree murder after plotting the murder of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. Dee Dee had been restricting and controlling Gypsy’s life since as early as she was able to remember, forcing her to falsely believe that she was sick and disabled, which in-turn led Gypsy to plot the murder of her mother.
For years, Gypsy was the poster-child for a sick, disabled girl whom her mother had devoted her life to care for. Gypsy was told she had conditions such as leukemia, muscular dystrophy, and asthma, and hence was forced to take medication, wear leg braces, and use a wheelchair. However, doctors later concluded that she did not have any of the longstanding conditions which her mother had claimed. Instead, her mother was suffering from a mental disorder called Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (MSBP), a form of child abuse through medical fraud. Gypsy Rose’s story, featured on major news networks around America, quickly caught the attention and hearts of people everywhere.
In 2015, Gypsy, who was by then 23 years old, was accused and convicted of second-degree murder due to her involvement in the plot and murder of her mother. After an uncontested plea agreement was reached, Gypsy was sentenced to 10 years in prison with her release date to be determined in July of 2024. July of 2024 marks Gypsy’s 10th year in prison, and thus has become, for many people around the nation, an event headlined in publications and news outlets.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s story has continued to fascinate and captivate people from all different backgrounds. While her conviction and incarceration remain controversial, many people feel a deep empathy for her circumstances and the horrifying truth behind her actions; that she was only trying to escape the lifelong perpetration of abuse caused by her mother. In the light of the devastating truth about Gypsy and Dee Dee’s relationship, Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s story is one which will continue to surprise and captivate people for many years to come.
