Adolf Hitler is widely viewed as one of the most notorious figures of the 20th century. He was a German leader of the Nazi Party and a dictator who initiated World War II in Europe and orchestrated the Holocaust, the systematic murder of millions of European Jews.
Hitler was born on April 20th, 1889 in Braunau am Inn, Austria, where his father worked as a customs official. During his youth, Hitler often clashed with his father, who did not approve of his son’s lack of interest in academic pursuits and preferred that he join the Austrian civil service.
In 1913, Hitler moved to Munich, Germany and joined the German military. After serving in World War I, Hitler spent time in political exile and in prison, during which time he wrote his autobiographical work Mein Kampf. It was during this time that he formed his radical right-wing ideology, which included German racial superiority and anti-Semitism.
After his release, Hitler was appointed to lead the National Socialist German Workers’ Party, more commonly known as the Nazi Party. He launched a successful campaign to become Germany’s chancellor in 1933; he was appointed by German president Paul von Hindenburg.
As Germany’s leader, Hitler quickly moved to gain control of the government, suspend civil liberties and pass laws that discriminated against Jews and other minority groups. The Nazi Party also started a program of economic and military expansion.
Hitler is remembered for his militarism, as well as for the genocide of millions of Jewish and other non-Aryan European people during World War II. He is also blamed for initiating a conflict that resulted in more than 50 million deaths, making it one of the deadliest wars in history.
Hitler committed suicide on April 30, 1945, shortly after Germany’s surrender to Allied forces.
