John Winston Ono Lennon, or simply John Lennon, was a wildly influential musician, singer, songwriter, and peace activist. His work as a founding member of The Beatles and later as a solo artist gave the world some of its most beloved music. Lennon was born in Liverpool, England on October 9th, 1940 and spent much of his early life in poverty.
At the age of sixteen, Lennon formed a skiffle group named The Quarrymen. The Quarrymen eventually evolved into The Beatles, with Lennon being the most musically influential of the group. Smashing into stardom with the 1963 single "Please Please Me", The Beatles quickly reached the top of the charts, becoming one of the most commercially successful acts of their time.
The Beatles defined the counterculture of the 1960’s with their creativity and social awareness, producing timeless masterpieces like "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "All You Need Is Love". Lennon’s solo career also took off with the release of groundbreaking albums like Plastic Ono Band, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, and Mind Games. Throughout it all, Lennon shared with the world his beliefs in peace and human rights, along with his views on politics, art, and social issues.
John Lennon was murdered in New York City on December 8th, 1980. He left behind a legacy of timeless music, inspiring others to speak out against war, racism, and inequality. Though he was gone far too soon, the impact of his life is still felt in the world today.
