John Prine is an American singer-songwriter and musician with a decades-long career in the folk music scene. He is widely considered one of the most influential songwriters of all time, renowned for his characteristically irreverent, humorous, and personal work.
Born in Maywood, Illinois in 1946, Prine first developed his interest in music while still in high school, where he learned to play guitar and sang unofficial songs while working odd jobs. After enlisting in the army and serving in Germany, Prine returned home to Chicago, determined to pursue a career as a musician. In the late-1960s, he began writing songs for the club scene and made his first professional recording in 1971.
The success of his debut album, “John Prine,” quickly established Prine as a major figure in the music industry. He has since released 15 studio albums, with notable songs such as "Angel from Montgomery," "Paradise," and "Hello in There" garnering huge attention. Prine’s work has earned him two Grammy Awards and artist honors from the Grammys, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the American Society of Composers and Publishers (ASCAP).
Prine is widely respected for his songwriting and has influenced many renowned musicians such as Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Emmylou Harris. He remains an active performer and continues to tour around the country despite battling cancer in the past 10 years.
