John Wayne Gacy, Jr. (March 17, 1942 – May 10, 1994) was an American serial killer who was convicted and later executed for the rape and murder of 33 boys and young men between 1972 and 1978. He was also known by the nickname of the “Killer Clown” due to his habit of dressing up and entertaining children as the character “Pogo the Clown” at parties and events.

Gacy was born in Chicago, Illinois, the second of three children of a machinist, John Stanley Gacy, and his wife, Marion Elaine Robinson. Though his parents had a strained relationship, Gacy was said to have shared a close relationship with his father during his teenage years. He was very ambitious and worked various manual labor jobs, but had difficulty maintaining relationships with girls.

Despite all this, his real criminality did not start until after he was married, when he began molesting minor boys and young men. He was first arrested in 1968 for the attempted child abduction of a 15-year-old, who he met at a Maryland youth center where Gacy was serving as a volunteer. He was sent for psychiatric evaluation and, upon his release, resumed his criminal activities.

He was eventually arrested in December of 1978, after the disappearance of one of the victims had finally been linked to his address. During his trial, Gacy maintained his innocence, claiming insanity as his defense. However, the forensic experts and psychiatrists declared him to be sane and responsible for his actions. In March of1980, Gacy was found guilty of 33 counts of murder and was sentenced to death by lethal injection. His execution took place on May 10, 1994 in Illinois.

John Wayne Gacy is one of the most infamous American serial killers of all time, having gone on to become an infamous symbol of pure evil.
