Kim Potter is a former police officer from Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. She was placed on administrative leave following the fatal shooting of Daunte Wright at a traffic stop on April 11, 2021.
The 20-year veteran of the Brooklyn Center Police Department, Potter served as the police chief for the past two years. Prior to joining the department, Potter was a police officer and later a detective in the neighboring city of Robbinsdale. She was also a nine-year-member of the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office Mounted Patrol Unit.
According to an official report of the incident, Potter fired a single .40-Caliber round from her service weapon after Wright, who had an outstanding warrant, attempted to re-enter his vehicle. Potter believed she had deployed her taser, believing the weapon to be non-lethal.
Since the shooting, Potter has been the subject of intense media scrutiny, with many questioning why she pulled the trigger and why she mistook her taser for her service weapon.
Despite the controversy, those who know Potter have spoken out in her defense, praising the outgoing chief as a “dedicated and highly-respected public safety servant” who has been unfairly targeted in the media.
Potter has since resigned from the police department, although it is not clear if this was voluntarily or if she was asked to step down. Her lawyers have argued that the incident was an accident and that Potter served the community with pride and dedication for the past two decades.
At this time, Potter faces no criminal charges or civil liability for the incident.
