Larry Hoover is an African-American former gang leader. He is also known as “King Larry” and he is the founder and former leader of the Gangster Disciples street gang.
Hoover was born in Jackson, Mississippi in 1950. He moved to Chicago at a young age and quickly became involved in the crime scene. In the 1960s he joined the Supreme Gangsters and helped form the Black Gangster Disciples in 1968. He took leadership of the gang and turned it into a powerful organization.
Hoover was arrested in 1973 and convicted of murder and attempted murder. He was sentenced to 150 to 200 years in prison. Despite his sentence, he was able to remain in control of the Gangster Disciples from behind bars.
In the early 1990s, Hoover negotiated a peace treaty between rival gangs in Chicago. He has since released several music albums to promote non-violence and encourage peace in gang activities.
In May 2016, Hoover filed a clemency petition with the State of Illinois Board of Pardons and Paroles. He has since been released from prison after serving over 40 years behind bars.
Hoover has remained a controversial figure and he has been criticized for his criminal activities and connection with the Gangster Disciples. However, he is also respected by many for his involvement in the Chicago peace treaty and his fight for social justice.
