Mark Meadows is an American politician who currently serves as the White House Chief of Staff in the administration of President Donald Trump. He was previously a leading member of the House Freedom Caucus and a Republican Member of the United States House of Representatives for North Carolina’s 11th congressional district from 2013 to 2020.
Meadows was born in 1963 in Verdae, South Carolina. He graduated from the University of South Florida and attended Countryside High School. After college, he returned to North Carolina, where he owned and operated restaurants and real estate development ventures.
Meadows began his political career in 2011 when he announced his candidacy to represent North Carolina’s newly reconfigured 11th congressional district. He faced multiple opponents in the Republican primary, with Tea Party support helping him to emerge victorious and go on to face Democrat Hayden Rogers in the 2012 general election. Despite a deep-pocketed challenger and the support of Democratic-leaning groups, Meadows was able to steadily build a solid reputation in the Washington, DC area and eventually win his seat in the House of Representatives.
In the House of Representatives, Meadows quickly established himself as a leader of the conservative Freedom Caucus. He earned plaudits from his Republican colleagues and the President himself for a persistent and tireless approach to shifting the direction of the Congress in a more conservative direction.
In March 2020, Meadows stepped down from his seat in the House to become the White House Chief of Staff under President Trump. He replaced Mick Mulvaney, who had served in the position since 2018. As Chief of Staff, Meadows is a senior advisor to the President and is in charge of coordinating the operations of the White House. He is also the liaison between the President and Congress and between the administration and the public.
Meadows has been a staunch conservative and a loyal Trump supporter. Despite opposing Trump during the 2016 election and early in his Presidency, Trump and Meadows have quickly developed a strong rapport and Meadows often acts as an informal advisor to the President. His work in the House of Representatives has prepared him well for his current role as Chief of Staff and there is no doubt that Meadows will have an influential voice in the Oval Office.
