Mel Kiper Jr. is a well-known sports commentator and entrepreneur. He is best known for his analytical approach to the NFL draft, which he began covering in 1984. A lifelong Baltimore Orioles fan, Mel Kiper Jr. is known to the general public primarily for his appearances as an NFL Draft expert on ESPN.
Kiper was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and attended the University of Pittsburgh. While in college, he ran a business doing mock drafts of NFL players and sold the information to newspapers and magazines. This helped him gain a reputation as an authoritative source on the NFL draft and was his ticket to his now famous career at ESPN.
Kiper has been analyzing the NFL Draft since 1984, when he was discovered by ESPN’s director of programming. After working as a draft analyst for the network for a number of years, Kiper became an instant hit amongst viewers and the channel’s stars. Now, he is considered one of the most knowledgeable draft observers in the world, and a staple at ESPN’s NFL Draft coverage.
Kiper is also an entrepreneur. He owns and operates Mel Kiper Jr. Enterprises, a consulting firm that specializes in media relations, talent acquisition, and corporate marketing. He has also authored a number of books, including "NFL Draft Reports" and "Drafting Success: The Mel Kiper Jr. Way."
Kiper has been inducted into the National Football Foundation’s Hall of Champions, and he was the recipient of the 2000 Outstanding Achievement Award. He was also awarded the 2007 media excellence award by the Greater Baltimore Committee.
