The $20 bill is the most popular denomination of American currency, and it features one of the nation’s most prominent founding fathers – Andrew Jackson.
Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) was the seventh president of the United States and a military hero who first rose to fame as the leader of forces during the War of 1812.
After a career in politics and the military, Jackson was elected president in 1828 and served two terms until 1837.
His presidential legacy has been mixed — on one hand, he was known for his populism and commitment to democracy, but he was also considered by many to be responsible for the Indian Removal Act of 1830, which led to the displacement of thousands of Native Americans from their ancestral homelands.
Jackson’s likeness has been featured on the $20 bill since 1928, making him the only president to have an American currency bill dedicated completely to his person. He is depicted in a full-length portrait, making it the only currency bill to feature a presidential portrait in that manner and an image of the White House on the reverse side.
The current portrait of Jackson on the $20 bill is based on a portrait by American artist Ralph Eleaser Whitehead, who made the painting in 1835 when Jackson was still in office. The background of the bill also features depictions of the White House and The Hermitage, Jackson’s former estate in Tennessee.
The Treasury Department has announced plans to redesign the current bill to make it more secure against counterfeiting and reduce the perception that Jackson is still the most important person featured on the $20 bill. The bill’s design is expected to feature a mix of multiple notable Americans who, like Jackson, made significant contributions to the US. These plans have been postponed, however, due to the pandemic and a potential change in the presidential administration.
