Q Anon is an anonymous internet figure who has been distributing controversial information. Q is believed to have started posting in October of 2017 on message boards such as 4chan and 8chan, and since then has published cryptic messages that have been interpreted by its followers to be predictions of future events.
Q Anon’s messages are often cryptic and can be difficult to decipher, but he has released "evidence" to support his claims that some of his predictions have come true. He has made several references to both U.S. and international politics, and has suggested that there is a deep-state organization within the U.S. government that is working to undermine President Donald Trump. He has also hinted at a global conspiracy involving governments, celebrities, and business leaders.
The influence of Q Anon has made him attractive to conspiracy theorists and prompted some followers to take action. In 2018, a man named Cesar Sayoc was arrested for sending mail bombs to prominent Democrats who were viewed as enemies of Q Anon, and the FBI has credited Q Anon with inspiring some of the highest rates of hate crimes against LGBTQ people seen in over a decade. While it is unknown who Q Anon is or why they are sharing these cryptic messages, they have become a figurehead for an ever-growing movement of conspiracy theorists and their unfounded claims.
