QAnon is an anonymous internet conspiracy theorist known for promoting the baseless QAnon conspiracy theory, which centers around the belief that U.S. President Donald Trump is waging a secret battle against a "deep state" cabal of Satan-worshipping child sex traffickers. QAnon followers typically post cryptic comments on social media, where they are typically referred to as "believers".
The identity of QAnon is not publicly known and it is unclear who is behind the name, but some speculation has associated it with an individual or group working for the Trump administration, or even Trump himself. It is possible that QAnon is run by multiple individuals who may be part of Domestic Terrorism groups.
Since mid-2017, QAnon has grown from a fringe conspiracy theory among internet followers to a more organized collection of activists and experts, who have since seen the QAnon belief system expand to include many related conspiracies and theories. QAnon followers have organized real-world protests, and are planning on holding more events around the U.S.
QAnon has been linked with numerous hate groups and anti-government activities, as well as inspiring other anti-government organizations. They are also accused of creating false information, including making false claims of child trafficking in order to support their beliefs. The QAnon conspiracy theory has been criticized as dangerous and a threat to democracy, as it promotes hostile and divisive rhetoric.
The FBI has identified QAnon as a domestic terrorism threat, and QAnon followers have been involved in violence at events throughout the U.S. QAnon is a far-right organization and is considered to be a hate group.
As a result of the spread of QAnon, many social media platforms have taken measures to counter the group’s influence by banning QAnon accounts, content and even hashtags. While it is unclear whether these measures will lead to the end of the QAnon movement, their widespread dissemination of false information and promotion of hate may be curtailed by increasing content moderation in the online space.
