Sam Elliott is an American actor known for roles in films like The Big Lebowski, Tombstone, and The Hero. He has been married to actress Katharine Ross since 1984.
The couple met in 1984 on the set of The Legacy, a low-budget horror film they were both starring in. Elliott recalled the moment they met in an interview, exclaiming, “She gave me a look, I gave her a look, and that was that. End of story." Despite the age gap, Elliott was immediately taken by Ross’ beauty: “It didn’t matter what she said. She could have said, ‘I wanna be a Chinese fire drill instructor,’ and I would have said, ‘Fine.’”
The pair kept in contact after the film wrapped, and Elliott soon asked Ross to be his wife. They tied the knot on May 9, 1984 at the San Ysidro Ranch in California and have been married ever since. The couple have one daughter, Cleo Rose, who was born on September 17, 1984.
The couple’s relationship has been strong for decades, with Ross saying, "We are in some ways an unusual couple- we’ll look at each other and laugh and say, ‘What are we doing together?’ But we do love each other." Elliott has also consistently praised Ross in interviews and talks, saying, “It’s a nonstop training in patience, care, love and devotion—which I didn’t have to be taught—but every time I get around her, I learn more and our relationship grows stronger. We’ve been so fortunate. This business can provide you with lots of twists and turns and sometimes you can get pulled apart if you let it. But we just delivered that horse to water and we don’t let it drink.”
The couple has mostly avoided the rest of Hollywood’s dating and marriage drama by staying busy with their careers, raising their daughter, and making their home in Idaho. Though they’ve been together for over three decades, they still look at each other the same way, with Elliot saying: “You can take the dust and the wrinkles off the bottle, but the wine still tastes the same”.
