Disney is one of the most influential entertainment companies in the world. Its movies, shows, parks, resorts, and merchandise have created an empire, one that employs over 195,000 people worldwide. But who is behind this multibillion dollar empire?
Bob Iger is the CEO of Disney. He has been in the role since March 2005, when Disney’s former Chairman and CEO, Michael Eisner, retired. Iger has led Disney through ten years of enormous growth, making it one of the most profitable and powerful companies in the world.
Iger was born in 1951 in New York City. He was interested in media and entertainment from a young age and began his career as an intern at ABC. During his time there, he worked his way up the ranks, eventually becoming the president of ABC in 1996. In that role, he oversaw the development of some of the first major reality TV programs, like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
In 2005, Iger was named CEO of Disney. Some of Iger’s first moves as CEO included buying Pixar (2006), Marvel (2009), and Lucasfilm (2012). In total, these acquisitions have cost around $15 billion and have transformed Disney’s position in the film and entertainment industry.
Under Iger’s direction, Disney has seen phenomenal growth. Iger has overseen the successful launches of billions of dollars worth of blockbuster franchises, like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the creation of immersive theme parks, like Shanghai Disneyland and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Walt Disney World.
Bob Iger is set to step down from his position as CEO of Disney in 2021, but there’s no doubt that Iger’s decade-long vision and leadership has changed Disney forever.
