The title of “Fastest Man in the World” has been hotly contested over the years. While some athletes have made claims to the title on the basis of one-off performances in specific events, the names Usain Bolt and Tyson Gay have become synonymous with the crown.
Usain Bolt is widely considered to hold the record for the fastest man in the world. He is a Jamaican sprinter which held the world record at least 12 times between 2008 and 2019. He won three consecutive Olympic 100 meter gold medals, and established a world record of 9.58 seconds in Berlin in 2009. He also holds the longest streak of consecutive world championship titles at any distance, winning the 100 meter gold medal at the 2009, 2013, and 2015 World Championship events.
Tyson Gay is another sprinter who has been touted as the fastest ever. He held personal best time of 9.69 seconds in the 100 meters, and 19.58 seconds in 200 meters. His time in the short sprint was even faster than Usain Bolt’s at the time, but was later superseded. He won the U.S. congressional medal in 2009 for his achievements in sprinting.
Though no aggregate body can definitively declare one runner as the Fastest Man in the World, Usain Bolt and Tyson Gay have both made a lasting impression in the world of track and field. If anything, it can be said that they are two of the greatest sprinters of all-time. Their ability to push themselves, and the boundaries of what is possible, continues to inspire current and future generations of athletes.
