Islam was founded by the Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century CE. He was born in the city of Mecca, which is located in present-day Saudi Arabia. He was part of the Qurayshi tribe, a branch of the larger Arabian tribe called the Banu Hashim.
Muhammad is considered by Muslims to be the last prophet in a long line of prophets sent by Allah, or God. The teachings of earlier prophets were believed to be embodied in the Quran. Muhammad was seen as the final messenger of God to transmit the word of Allah.
As a young man, Muhammad was a successful merchant and family man. At the age of forty, however, he began to experience spiritual visions, which were accompanied by the teachings from the Angel Gabriel. Muhammad taught these revelations to his family, friends, and everyone else he encountered, gaining a following.
As his message of one God spread, Muhammed and his followers began to experience persecution, so they migrated to the city of Medina, which is now in modern-day Jordan. This event, known as the Hijra, marks the start of the Muslim calendar.
In Medina, Muhammad and the early Muslims successfully established a thriving community, characterized by social and economic justice. Ultimately, the Prophet Muhammad unified the Arabian Peninsula under the religion of Islam and laid down many of the foundations of the Muslim faith.
Today, the legacy of the Prophet Muhammad and his teachings form the basis of the Islamic faith which is practiced by more than 1.6 billion people around the world.
