As the details emerged from a small town in Alabama about an adolescent girl who was charged for the murder of her own parents, people began to take notice of one of the most harrowing stories of the decade. In December of 2018, Madison Jenkins, then aged fourteen, was charged with the shooting deaths of her parents, Monica and Kenneth Jenkins.
This tragedy has left the small community shell-shocked. Madison had at one point been considered to be an outstanding student, successful with academics and admired by peers. In the wake of these events, many members of the community recalled various moments of Madison’s life prior to her parents’ death that spoke with her lead-up to the ghastly incident.
Madison had moved to the small town of Haydenville just a year prior, relocated from a larger city where the family felt their safety was at risk due to the high levels of crime in their former home. While the parents spent time adjusting to the small town and their new life, Madison was forced to endure teasing from her peers and academic pressure that far exceeded the levels to which she was accustomed.
As time went on, Madison began to harbor resentment towards her parents for their lack of protection, leading to arguments and ultimately culminating in the now infamous shooting on December 3rd. After the shooting, Madison immediately contacted authorities, admitting she had done what her parents had requested she never do, taking the lives of her own loved ones.
A court date has been set, and Madison has been charged as an adult with two counts of capital murder. While the community reckons with the events that Madison has brought recently, many questions remain unanswered as to what had driven her to this terrible crime.
