Andrew Cuomo is the current governor of New York. He is a member of the Democratic Party and was first elected as Governor in 2010.
Cuomo was born in Brooklyn in 1957. After graduating from Fordham University, he obtained his law degree from Albany Law School. In 1982, he began his career as an assistant district attorney in Manhattan. After working in the office of the New York State Governor, he became the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in 1997.
In 2006, Cuomo launched his campaign to become Governor of New York. He served as New York’s attorney general from 2007 to 2010. In November 2010, he was elected as Governer in a landslide victory and was officially sworn into office on January 1, 2011.
In his time as Governor of New York, Cuomo has successfully advanced a variety of progressive policies. These include the New York marriage equality act, the SAFE Act, the Marriage Equality Act, and the Women’s Equality Agenda. He has also worked to combat poverty, provide resources to underserved communities, and reduce gun violence. He championed the establishment of a $15 minimum wage and an immigration reform policy.
Governor Andrew Cuomo is up for re-election in 2018 and is widely expected to win. He has remained popular among voters and has the support of influential Democrats like Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden. Cuomo is expected to win a third term as the Governor of New York in November.
