The rap genre has been around for over 40 years, evolving from its beginnings in the early 80s in the Bronx, to its pervasive influence today. While rap has become an international phenomenon, it is hard to pinpoint who is the undisputed “king of rap”—a title that can only be earned after continual success, innovation, and influence.
A case could be made for multiple artists as the king of rap. Jay-Z has tremendous success with over 50 million albums sold and 21 Grammy awards. Eminem has a distinct style that moves beyond traditional rap music, combining emotion, and lyrical complexity with heavy 808s and hard-hitting beats. Other names to consider include Lil Wayne, Nas, Andre 3000, Kendrick Lamar, and Kanye West.
In the end, though, it might be impossible to crown the king of rap definitively. The genre is much too vast and nuanced. Each artist brings something different to the rap game, so the best answer might be that there is no single king of rap—it is an ever-evolving genre filled with great artists and innovators.
