Since January 1, 2014, the mayor of New York City has been Bill de Blasio, who was elected with a wide margin in 2013.
De Blasio, a Democrat, was born in Manhattan and has a long and distinguished career in public service. He served as the city’s Public Advocate from 2010 to 2013, and before that as a City Council Member representing Brooklyn. As Mayor, de Blasio has made reducing income inequality and addressing NYC’s affordable housing crisis top priorities of his Administration. He has also prioritized the fight against climate change and protecting the rights of immigrants and members of the LGBTQ community. Additionally, he has expanded access to Pre-K education, improved police-community relations, and stood up for public-sector unions in the face of proposed budget cuts.
De Blasio is the first Democratic mayor of New York City in 20 years, following former Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s 12 consecutive years at the helm of the City. A lifelong New Yorker and advocate for progressive policies, de Blasio has won respect from New Yorkers for his commitment to championing his constituents’ rights and needs.
